Quest: new smartphone payment system

The Australian Payments Network has approved the release of the "Tap-to-Phone with PIN" technology, developed by Quest Payment Systems. The system allows merchants to accept contactless card payments on almost any modern Android smart phone by downloading an app – in effect converting a smartphone into a payments terminal.

According to Quest, this system – abbreviated to Airpay TAP – is the first of its kind to be made available in Australia, and has been approved by all major payment schemes.

Quest CEO Jan Mason said she was thrilled to have received AusPayNet’s approval for Airpay TAP following a successful trial of the technology by NAB and Visa in 2019.

Transactions over the contactless limit require cardholders to authorise payments using a PIN. Biometric authentication is also supported for users of mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.
