Carnegie quits ANZ

Ian Rogers

Bruce Rush, CEO, Suncorp Bank

Maile Carnegie, ANZ’s group executive Australia retail will leave the bank on 1 July, so in little more than a week.

Bruce Rush, the Suncorp Bank CEO and managing director, Queensland will be the acting group executive retail.

Carnegie plans to focus on non-executive roles, ANZ said.

Rush will now be directly responsible for the development (and perhaps a speedier rollout) of ANZ Plus, ANZ’s new retail banking platform, which is critical to the integration of Suncorp Bank with ANZ.

At is half-year results in May, the bank said ANZ Plus - launched in late 2002 - had1.06 million customers on the Plus platform.

Deposits on ANZ Plus were $21 billion at March, out of a group total of $359 billion in deposits.

ANZ hired Bruce Rush from Santander UK in 2010. He has been CEO of Suncorp Bank since August 2024.

The bank said it conduct a global search for Carnegie’s replacement.

Carnegie’s leaving only a month after Nuno Matos assumed the helm of ANZ as CEO will reinforce speculation there are likely to be further changes to the bank’s top executive team in the next little while.
