CUBS a check on all banks 24 July 2008 4:49PM Ian Rogers One detail that stands out in the ACCC's assessment of the issues in the proposed takeover by Westpac of St George Bank is the significance of the long tail of alternative providers of transaction banking services in catering to a surprisingly large segment of the market. The ACCC estimated that credit unions and building societies accounted for 17 per cent of the accounts segment in New South Wales (where Westpac has an 11 per cent market share and St George, a former building society, has 20 per cent). In South Australia the CUBS sectors has a 24 per cent market share (thanks to the reach of Australian Central and Savings & Loans). Westpac has a market share of only four per cent in SA while St George, which owns the rump of the former State Bank, has a 20 per cent share.
