BNPL providers link with payment networks

22 February 2021 6:14AM

Buy now pay later providers humm and Sezzle have announced partnerships with big payment platforms, as they and other BNPL companies look for ways to offer easier access to their services.

humm’s new small business BNPL product can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted, while Sezzle has signed an agreement that allows it to work merchants on the Discover network.

humm’s new product, hummpro, can be used in store and online and provides access to funds up to A$30,000.

humm said hummpro can be used to pay supplier invoices without a requirement that the supplier be onboarded, which it claims is a point of difference from other BNPL providers.

The pitch is interest free cashflow flexibility but there are a number of fees. Charges include a $15 monthly fee, a $20 late payment fee, and a charge of 3.5 per cent to pause repayments for a month. There is also a facility to convert a monthly balance to a repayment plan at the cost of 1.5 per cent a month.

Customers must link a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card account of Apple Pay for auto repay.

Under the terms of Sezzle deal with Discover, “select” US merchants on the Discover network will be able to offer their customers Sezzle’s interest-free BNPL option and process the payments on the network.

In a note on the Sezzle deal, E&P analyst Matthew Wilson said it gave the company a “clear revenue and business development growth opportunity. Down the track we see additional positive cost economics from accessing the Discover network and its banking infrastructure”.
