Suncorp loses the architect of its technology transformation

16 June 2014 3:50PM
Suncorp is the latest major financial institution to go looking for a new chief information officer.CIO Matt Pancino has been moved into the role of chief executive officer of Suncorp Business Services, following the resignation of high profile tech leader Jeff Smith.Smith, who was CIO of Suncorp before Pancino, has overseen Suncorp's technology programs for the past seven years but is now returning to his native US to take on a global executive role with IBM.This year Commonwealth Bank, NAB, ANZ, Westpac and Credit Union Australia and now Suncorp have all replaced, or are in the process of replacing, their top tech talent.By leaving now Smith won't get to see the conclusion of Suncorp's A$1 billion technology transformation program, which is not due to finish until mid-2016. However he and Pancino have worked closely together over the past four years on the transformation program, and the transition should be smooth.Smith delivered a wealth of technical talent and broad market experience to Suncorp, having previously been the CIO of Telstra in Australia, and the CEO of Majitek, an Agile software business.Besides leading the technology programs at Suncorp, Smith has been the corporate poster boy for Agile technologies and techniques in Australia. While Agile techniques are now harnessed by some of the nation's largest enterprises to help organisations respond quickly to changing market conditions, Smith was one of the first corporate champions of the once avant-garde approach, becoming a fixture on the Agile conference circuit.
