Savings ratio stabilises

08 September 2016 3:57PM
The household savings ratio stabilised at eight per cent, on a seasonally adjusted basis, over the June 2016 quarter compared with March 2016, national accounts from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.On a trend basis, the savings ratio also remained steady over the quarter at 7.9 per cent. The savings ratio has declined since late 2011, when it was 11.1 per cent on a trend basis and 11.5 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis.?This phenomenon is in line with central bank expectations. In February, the Reserve Bank of Australia projected "a further modest decline over the next few years" in this ratio."After falling for more than two decades, the aggregate household saving ratio in Australia increased sharply in the latter half of the 2000s," the RBA.It said the decline in the savings ratio since 2011 was the result of households deciding to maintain higher consumption while income growth slowed.
