RAB hops into mutual banking

Regional Australia Bank, headquartered in Armidale, will be the newest addition to the mutual banking landscape.Community Mutual Credit Union will adopt the new name from August.Kevin Dupe, chief executive of the mutual, said it was the latest step in the sector toward "a fifth pillar, creating a mutual banking sector that can compete."RAB will have around 70,000 members and an asset base of almost A$1 billionHe the choice of name "Australian Regional Bank came out of member and non-member surveys. The issue for us is the same as most mutuals."The younger generation don't understand credit unions or building societies and if they do it doesn't relate to them."Australian, the name, came up and regional did."The word bank, Dupe said, "had pluses and minuses."Seventeen credit unions have already made the switch to mutual bank status. The shift by Community Mutual leaves another 15 credit unions may meet APRA's minimum assets threshold.
