Payment data shows a fall in consumer spending in April

Consumer spending was soft in April, with credit and charge purchases, debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals all down.According to the latest Reserve Bank payment data, consumers spent A$23.4 billion on credit and charge cards in April, compared with $25.4 billion the previous month.That is an average of $1425 per card account, compared with $1551 per card account in March.Consumers spent $19.2 billion on debit cards in April, compared with $20.3 billion in March.That is an average of $457 per debit card account, compared with $483 per account in March.The value of ATM withdrawals fell from $11.6 million in March to $11.1 million in April.The value of credit card cash advances and cash-out on debit cards also fell.
