New Zealand messes with Aussie banks
18 December 2018 5:32PM
BNZ needs A$5 billion in capital. ANZ needs $8 billion. Westpac will get away with closer to $2 billion. Commonwealth Bank and ASB have not said much yet on the 16 per cent core capital about to be newly mandated in New Zealand. The sturdy accumulation of capital in the name of reliability is the object of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for an overly Australian-centric banking sector the country.A doubling in core capital - to 16 per cent - exposes the weaker sides of the Australian- banking cartel. Westpac yesterday argued "the impact of any change is difficult to determine … as the initial proposals will change both tier 1 capital and RWA."NAB told the ASX "additional capital for BNZ does not impact the NAB group capital position, other than the potential increase in in Raw related to BNZ exposures."
