Many bankers want to work in mining

22 August 2012 4:48PM
Banks are cutting jobs with such gusto that a majority of their staff say they want to work elsewhere. Being pragmatists, they want to work for miners.A periodic survey by eFinancialCareers found that 78 per cent are thinking about leaving financial services.Of finance workers in Australia surveyed by eFC, 26 per cent said they wanted to work in mining, while 10 per cent said they wanted to work in the oil and gas sector.George McFerran, managing director Asia Pacific for eFinancialCareers, said the survey questions arose from discussions on trends raised at recruitment roundtables.    "When you consider what the financial sector's been going through these last few years… [it's not] a huge surprise."People are looking. It's been reasonably lame from a job perspective. "There's been a steady slew of headlines around job cuts and when that happens people start to look, especially in Australia, where the natural resources part of the economy is doing so well."It not only offers career opportunity, people want some stability."Three-quarters of Australian finance workers surveyed said they were not considering moving to another country. The same percentage cited "quality of life" as their main reason for wanting to remain in Australia.
