Identity theft the fastest growing credit application fraud

Identity theft is the fastest growing type of credit application fraud in Australia, growing by 80 per cent in the year to June, compared with the previous year.It is the second most common type of credit application fraud, making up 19 per cent of total fraudulent applications.Falsification of personal details remains the most common type of credit application fraud, accounting for 70.9 per cent of the total. There was a 27 per cent increase in the falsification of personal details in the year to June.Falsifying personal details includes fabricating or altering pay slips, tax assessments, bank statements and drivers' licences.Overall, there was a 33 per cent increase in credit application fraud in 2015/16.Fifty-seven per cent of credit application fraud occurred online, compared with 50 per cent the previous year.Broker channel fraud is also growing, with 15 per cent of credit application fraud occurring through brokers.Credit cards were the products most often involved in fraudulent applications, involved in 45 per cent of cases. Personal loans were involved in 15.9 per cent of cases and mortgages in 12.9 per cent of cases.
