Consumers ready to do more banking online

30 September 2014 3:18PM
Consumer demand for a wider range of online banking services is growing, with 24 per cent of respondents to a survey saying they would prefer to complete a home loan application online. This is a surprising finding, given that online applications currently account for only a few per cent of home loan sales. The survey commissioned by ME Bank also found that 45 per cent of consumers would prefer to apply for a credit card online and 43 per cent would prefer to open a transaction account online. When it comes to Gen X and Gen Y, the proportion who prefer the digital channel is much higher. Sixty per cent of Gen Ys said they would prefer to apply for a credit card online. When asked about other online banking facilities, 53 per cent said they wanted their transactions settled and their accounts updated in real time, 27 per cent said they wanted access to customer chat facilities and 26 per cent said they wanted budgeting and money management tools.ME Bank chief executive Jamie McPhee said in a media release that the survey results showed that consumers felt online banking services were reliable and convenient, and they wanted more.McPhee said 74 per cent were satisfied with their bank's current online capabilities. Respondents said convenience, ease and speed were the things they liked about online banking.
