Citi wields the axe at Diners Club

22 February 2005 11:00AM
Citibank will outsource or axe around 80 jobs from its workforce at Diners Club in Melbourne. Most of the work will be farmed out to third party providers and other Citibank services centres in India and the Philippines. ANZ Bank has also taken over some data entry work for Diners.Maggie Grady, head of corporate affairs for Citigroup Australia and New Zealand advised in an email that Diners' decision to transfer "the least complex calls" undertaken by Diners operations centre in the Melbourne suburb of Hartwell affected 20 temporary staff, and that if trials being conducted on moderate and more complex calls which might mean customer complaints then another 48 permanent staff within the call centre may be affected.Grady has therefore confirmed most but not all of the reduction in jobs, though the charge card company (a subsidiary of Citibank) has already informed the Finance Sector Union that around 80 jobs are affected. Industry speculation suggests that deeper jobs cuts are being planned, and that Diners will reduce its workforce in Australia to sales and marketing personnel only, or about 60 people.A majority of Diners' Australian workforce are already temporary employees in preparation for the business restructure.
