Chapman selected as chief bank supervisor

Keith Chapman will replace Wayne Byres as executive general manager of the Diversified Institutions Division at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. The "diversified institutions" role puts him in charge of supervision of the major banks.Byres is leaving APRA this month to take up the post of secretary general of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in Switzerland. Chapman was executive general manager of the supervisory support division at APRA. His career in financial regulation dates from the days of the Insurance and Superannuation Commission, one of the predecessor agencies folded into APRA in 1998. Chapman served as deputy commissioner for superannuation at the ISC.APRA has promoted Helen Rowell from general manager of policy development to replace Chapman.Rowell joined APRA in 2002 from actuarial consulting firm Towers Perrin.
