CEO SPECULATION REFRESHED

07 June 2007 10:00AM
The Australian speculates on the selection by the boards of ANZ and Westpac of new chief executives to replace the retiring John McFarlane and David Morgan respectively. The newspaper reported today (in an article rather buried in its business section) that the boards of each bank "are believed to have settled on internal candidates as their next chief executives".The presentation and the tone don't suggest a lot of confidence by the newspaper in their scoop. The article rehashes suggestions that Phil Chronican, the head of institutional banking is the favourite at Westpac and Brian Hartzer, the head of retail banking, is the favourite at ANZ.The newspaper also canvasses an implausible shortlist of contenders for the two vacancies of CEO.
