CBA's Albert device remains offline
The Commonwealth Bank is still suffering birth pains with the Albert point of sale device more than two years after it was first announced.Despite securing PCI certification for the device back in April, and having run an extensive Sydney trial during which more than 12,000 transactions have so far been processed using the system, the CBA has yet to firm up a launch date for the Albert which was first announced in July 2012.Albert is an Android tablet with a touchscreen, a secure EMV interface able to accept chip and PIN cards, a receipt printer, and 3G and WiFi connectivity. It is being developed by the bank in association with Wincor Nixdorf and Ideo. While extended trials have shown the system works as a payments system the bank has yet to fix a number of niggling quality issues with the device which continue to delay its launch. The extended delay puts CBA at the top of the global gestation tree; even the African elephant gives birth in less than two years.
