Briefs: Borrowers rush to refinance, Visa reshuffles execs, P2P insurance

14 March 2014 5:30PM
Low interest rates have seen almost one in three borrowers start the New Year by ditching their lender, according to analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data for January 2014 by comparison website finder.com.au. The proportion of home loans written for refinancing was near record levels at 31 per cent. The same research showed a spike in the number of borrowers fixing their home loans in January. Vipin Kalra, country manager for Visa in Australia, is to move to Singapore as new head of acquiring and merchant sales and solutions for Visa in the Asia Pacific. He will be responsible for Visa's payment acceptance strategy and its merchant and acquirer relationships across the region. Former CommSec managing director Stephen Karpin, who has been Visa's group country manager for Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific since joining in January 2014, will continue to lead the firm's Australian business and client relationships from Sydney. Australian web-based labour outsourcing outfit Airtasker has launched a A$20 million public liability insurance policy for third party injury and property damage. Backed by Lloyd's, the policy covers people for accidents when they complete tasks allocated to them via Airtasker, such as house cleaning, handyman jobs or deliveries. Airtasker chief Tim Fung claimed this was an Australian first, "in terms of providing insurance for our users on a task-by-task basis". Lloyd's also provides insurance for users of couch-surfing website Airbnb.
