BOQ progresses in banking queue

01 April 2010 5:47PM
Bank of Queensland achieved a minor milestone over the last month, elbowing past Suncorp Metway and also BankWest to become the sixth-largest holder of household deposits of any bank in Australia.BOQ held $13.96 billion in household deposits at the end of February 2010, monthly data published by APRA shows. BankWest has deliberately allowed its retail deposit business to reverse as Commonwealth Bank lets the most expensive funding raised in 2008 run off.Suncorp probably would rather be growing its retail deposit book but hasn't offered as generous interest rates as BOQ.BOQ's market share of retail deposits, at 3.1 per cent, is in fact less than earlier in the crisis, since the bulk of deposit inflows into the banking system made their way to the major banks.Among major banks, ANZ was the only one to improve its market share over February by a few basis points to 13.95 per cent. Perhaps the bigger theme among major banks and deposits is that National Australia Bank is not realising much of an improvement from its fee reductions on basic accounts.
