ANZ signs with UnionPay

16 January 2013 5:11PM
ANZ is catching up with the rising China UnionPay as a significant payments card brand. The bank said yesterday that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with UnionPay to expand card payment options for customers throughout Asia Pacific. ANZ said it expected to develop "a commercial framework" later in 2013. This is likely to include accepting CUP cards at merchants using ANZ terminals and also issuing CUP cards in China.National Australia Bank began to process payments made with CUP cards six years ago. Commonwealth Bank plans to soon do later this year.    Over half of the 900 million new payments cards issued in 2011 carried the UnionPay logo, according to research by RBR.The domestic Chinese scheme now accounts for 32 per cent of cards in circulation worldwide.
