ANZ manages India from London

28 February 2012 5:11PM
In an echo of the way ANZ used to run its business, the bank has announced that the executive responsible for the growth of its recently established business in India and south Asia will work from London. The bank adopted a similar approach in the 1980s and 1990s to the management of its then substantial Grindlays business in India (the business was sold off more than 10 years ago).Mark Robinson, the executive currently responsible for south Asia, will take on a wider role as chief executive of the bank's business covering Europe, America, the Middle East and India, but will be based in London.Gilles Plante will assume wider duties as CEO Asia, based in Hong Kong, the bank said yesterday. Plante was formerly CEO for north Asia.Earlier this month, ANZ said it would amalgamate its Asian and institutional banking divisions under the leadership of Alex Thursby. In addition to the reshaped jobs for Robinson and Plante, ANZ announced nine other executive appointments yesterday. One of these is the appointment of Catherine Carver as head of institutional banking for Australia. She will be based in Perth, a city with a distinct shortage of institutional bankers.
