ALP WILL SCRAP ACCESS CARD

07 June 2007 10:00AM
The $1.1 billion health and welfare access card project will be scrapped if Labor win the upcoming federal election. The ALP spokesperson for human services, Tanya Plibersek, addressed the Smart Cards Summit in Sydney yesterday and told industry delegates that "we don't need a vast new billion dollar system to reduce fraud."Outside the conference, Plibersek told the media that "if there is no access card underway [should the party win government] Labor's position is very clear."We don't believe that this proposal is good enough, we don't support it and we will not be introducing an access card of our own."On Tuesday, the Minister for Human Services Senator Chris Ellison told the industry that the project's timetable was being extended well beyond the election to allow for more consultation on the draft legislation.Plibersek argued against most of the proposed surface features of the card and raised numerous issues around privacy and security."This project was a turkey from the start," said Plibersek. "Labor believes the proposal would cost a lot more than the government says and it will save a lot less."
