20 credit unions make APRA cocktail

02 September 2019 3:56PM
Nine per cent of household deposits are banished from the system in APRA's new look monthly banking statistics. The first edition of the Monthly Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions Statistics (MADIS) came out on Friday, and the loss of deposits featured in an APRA backgrounder this weekend.Total residents deposits fell from A$2229.6 billion under the old MBS method for June 2019 to $2050.1 billion in July under the MADIS model. (APRA describes MADIS as "conceptually similar" to MBS, but benefitting from improvements in data quality inherent in the Economic and Financial Statistics data collection.)Housing loans for investment are 14 per cent greater at $647.4 billion and housing loans for owner-occupiers are down 5.4 per cent.Pleasingly, cocktail loans are back in fashion, probably managed on the client side.Total loans to households are 3.5 per cent more than APRA thought last month.20 credit unions made APRA's grade for the new look monthly, leaving dozens more to reflect again on their slender stature in the world of banking.
