Amex sets up PayID

29 March 2023 5:25AM

American Express has partnered with Cuscal to launch a PayID service for its card customers to pay their bills, promising to make payments quicker and more secure. PayID allows payments to be made to a recipient’s mobile number, email address, ABN or ACN. It replaces BSBs and account numbers for “pay anyone” payments. NPP Australia reported in November last year that more than 100 banks and other financial institutions are offering their customers the ability to link a PayID to their bank account and that about 12.7 million Australians have a PayID. Now it is being taken up by business. Payments service providers have been promoting it as a replacement for Bpay, offering faster payments. Amex is claiming that its adoption of PayID is a first for a card issuer. It has connected to Cuscal’s programming interface, allowing card members to use a unique PayID for account payments. Because PayID operates on the New Payments Platform it is an instant payment. NPP Australia has been promoting PayID as a more secure way to make payments. It provides a measure of security through its “confirmation step”: when a person makes a payment to a PayID, they are shown the name of the recipient before completing the payment. This process can help identify when a scammer is imitating a person or business in a bid to redirect customer payments.
