ACCC sues debt collector

Banking Day staff Finance regulation

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken debt collector Panthera Finance to court, alleging it unduly harassed consumers over debts they did not owe. The ACCC alleges that the company repeatedly contacted the consumers for payment, despite being advised that they were not liable for the debts, and in two cases placed incorrect default listings on the consumers’ credit files. The ACCC is seeking penalties and orders for a compliance program.
