Federal Court approves NAB bank fees settlement

07 April 2016 4:17PM
The Federal Court yesterday made orders approving the settlement of a class action brought against National Australia Bank over bank fees. The settlement deed will take effect once the appeal period expires or, if there is an appeal, the orders are not overturned. The court orders follow an application by Maurice Blackburn on March 18 seeking approval for the settlement. The NAB class action was started in 2011 and in late 2014 the bank gave a commitment to explore opportunities for a resolution. The first bank fees class action dates back to 2010 when Maurice Blackburn issued proceedings against ANZ, in the first of a series of actions involving nine banks.Maurice Blackburn said in a media release that if the settlement proceeds NAB will pay A$6.6 million.Litigation funder IMF issued a statement saying all of the clients involved in banks fees class actions have agreed to share the common costs of the ANZ action, which means that some of the NAB settlement money will be paid to IMF.
