Apple Pay goes live today

19 November 2015 5:03PM
American Express card members in Australia will be able to use Apple Pay from today.Users of Amex corporate, small business and personal cards (including the David Jones card) will have access to the service, but not holders of Amex companion cards issued by the major banks. The Apple Pay app is compatible with current model iPhones, iPads and the Apple Watch.Any point of sale terminal that accepts contactless Amex card payments will accept an Apple Pay payment. Some of the larger retailers accepting Amex include Myer, David Jones, Woolworths, Target, Harris Farm, Bunnings and Shell.Australian banks are yet to comment on whether they will link their payment cards to Apple Pay. Local banks have not been prepared to pay the transaction fees Apple is charging card issuers overseas.Apple Pay is reported to have signed agreements with around 1000 payment card issuers worldwide since launching the service last year. However, various reports have indicated that take-up of the service overseas has been low. Last month the chief executive of US bank BankMobile, Jay Sidhu, said customers' use of Apple Pay was "practically zero".US researcher Aite Group said that after a year of operation Apple Pay accounted for only one per cent of retail payments in the United States.
