ANZ will soon offer three digital wallets

29 April 2016 4:00PM
ANZ could not say what the fate of its proprietary digital wallet, ANZ Mobile Pay, will be once it has Apple Pay and Android Pay in the market. The bank launched ANZ Mobile Pay in February, it launched Apple Pay yesterday and it expects to have Android Pay up and running by the middle of the year.ANZ managing director of product and marketing Matt Boss said it was yet to be decided whether the bank would continue to offer three digital wallets.Boss said: "We don't know. Our customers will tell us what works and what doesn't. Giving them choice is important. We have had great take-up of Mobile Pay."ANZ's Apple Pay facility is available to customers using the bank's Visa debit and credit cards and the ANZ American Express credit card.ANZ is also a MasterCard issuer and it will be included in the service "soon".It will work with the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch. The bank did not disclose its transaction fee arrangement with Apple. The delay in bringing Apple Pay to Australia has been assumed to be about Apple's fee.ANZ is the only Australian bank offering its customers Apple Pay.  The only other financial institution offering it is American Express.Boss said ANZ looked at customer demand and the advantage it would get from going first. He said the fee was fair and would not have a huge impact.Apple Pay incorporates tokenisation, which means that a unique series of numbers replaces the consumer's 16-digit card number when a payment is being made. Apart from its use for contactless payments at a point of sale terminal, online shoppers will be able to use it to pay at online shops accepting Apple Pay.
