Scheme debit creeps back at Woolworths
04 September 2012 7:08am
Holders of scheme debit cards will once more have the option of pressing the credit button at the payments terminal at Woolworths after the retailer negotiated a compromise with MasterCard and Visa over the issue.

Woolworths blocked this payment option in early 2010. Holders of scheme debit cards could still make purchases as long as they pushed the savings button instead.

This seemingly trivial distinction mattered for long term customers of credit unions and building societies who qualified for "free" transactions if they pushed credit, as their savings institution advised them to do.

Pushing the savings button could generate unexpected transaction fees.

Woolworths may have negotiated reduced fees with Visa and MasterCard, with the latter keen to ensure that their contactless payments technology would be processed at Woolworths for scheme debit card holders.

The change will be effective across the retailer's network by this weekend.
